A Big Island Inn - The Manago Hotel

ALOHA! ~~~~

Welcome to Captain Cook and Kealakekua, Hawaii - the epicenter of the local human-dolphin coastal interactions.

This is the historic Manago Hotel that welcomes you to the Big Island of Hawaii and a step out of the current timeline, back to a pre-WWII Hawaii. The Manago Hotel is located on Highway 11, on the slopes of Mauna Loa at the ideal, elevation 1,400 ft. It overlooks beautiful Kealakekua Bay, and the ancient Hawaiian Place of Refuge, Honaunau.

Dolphin Connection is happy to make this comfortable residency location available to you, only a few minutes drive away from Sky Island Ranch, the home of Joan Ocean and Jean-Luc Bozzoli.

This local landmark opened in 1917 after Osame Nagata came to Hawaii from Japan as a mail order bride and married Kinzo Manago. Landing in Honolulu, Osame met her husband for the first time and they exchanged marriage vows at a nearby Shinto shrine before moving to the Big Island. Working hard together, they began with a small house and soon they added rooms, attracting visitors from all over the world to their ryokan-style inn.

The Inn has a traditional, zen-like style that resonates with the natural spirit of Aloha. The rooms are simple and spotless. They originally served as a resting place for local coffee workers, businessmen and horse trainers. At one time there was a porcelain basin outside at the front door where the dusty farmers could wash up before going into the restaurant to eat. During World War II, many soldiers found this place to be their home away from home.

Now the Manago has expanded with three floors, balconies and ocean views. It also has wireless computer access for those who bring their own computer and a pay-to-use guest computer in the Lounge.

This is an ideal location with cool, quiet nights and sunny days, where travelers can relax and sleep comfortably. This photo is a typical ocean view from one of our private rooms with a balcony.

It has a popular restaurant with delicious local food, internet access, free parking and your room has a balcony with an ocean view overlooking the expansive starlit sky. Many E.T. vehicles have been seen there. It is an excellent upcountry place for contact.

And still you will see each day, members of the family, tanned and robust from the fresh ocean air, pruning and gardening at the Manago Inn. It is a friendly place.
